Drinking and driving is against the law, yet on average, nationally, one person is injured approximately every 2 minutes in alcohol-related crashes. Twenty-nine people die each day in automobile accidents that involve a drunk driver. In North Dakota, there were 30 fatalities in 2020. The majority of those crashes involved drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher - nearly double the legal limit. These statistics are staggering.
In 2012, Aaron, Allison, Brielle and Unborn Baby Deutscher were struck by a drunk driver on Interstate 94 and all five involved in the crash were tragically killed. To bring something positive out of that tragedy, family and friends of the Deutscher family started the Run4Change.
The Run4Change is a walk/run event designed to bring awareness to the devastating impact drinking and driving can have on those involved in alcohol-related crashes.
This year's Run4Change is scheduled for Saturday, April 10 at Sertoma Park in Bismarck, N.D. The event includes Allie's 10k run, Aaron's 5k run/walk, and Brielle's 1k bubble run/walk. Registration for the 9th annual event is now open at www.ndsc.org/run4change.
This year, the Deutscher family has asked the North Dakota Safety Council to continue their legacy of educating and funding activities that will help achieve zero roadway fatalities in North Dakota, by taking over management of the Run4Change. Learn more at www.ndsc.org.
