Jail Chaplains was formed as a non-profit 15 years ago with one full time position, a chaplain to primarily serve in the Cass County Jail. The chaplain is an employee of the non-profit at no cost to the taxpayers. Today, Jail Chaplains employs three full time staff and has a team of nearly 80 trained volunteers. The ministry starts relationships with men and women while they are behind the wall with a goal to encourage those desiring to make healthier life choices when they re-enter the community. After the opioid drug crisis hit Fargo-Moorhead, Jail Chaplains invested to bring the Living Free small group model to the FM area. The first groups were offered in the jail to serve as a bridge into the community when the inmates are released. To date, over 4000 men and women have participated in the Living Free groups which are designed to help anyone overcome a life controlling problem. Jail Chaplains moved into expanded office space this past June to increase their efficiencies and more effectively serve the community. The new space has a conference room where Living Free small groups can be hosted and a work room providing the opportunity for the volunteers to assist the staff with projects.
