UPDATE:

The September 2020 Masterworks program of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony’s 2020-21 season was to have been broadcast to season ticket holders this past Saturday, September 26, and to the general public on Sunday, September 27, but we encountered technical difficulties during the upload of the material.

We have rescheduled the broadcast periods for this coming weekend. Season ticket holders may view the Masterworks 1 program beginning Saturday, October 3, at 7:30 pm. Those who do not hold season tickets may watch the program beginning Sunday, October 4, at 2:00 pm. Viewers may find the link on the home page of the FMSO’s website, which is www.fmsymphony.org. The program may be viewed at any time after the start times noted above. The program will be available through Tuesday, October 6.

We apologize for this unexpected difficulty, and we assure you that we are doing everything we can to resolve the technical issues and ensure that you may view the concert this coming weekend. We greatly appreciate your patience.

ORIGINAL RELEASE:
The September 2020 Masterworks program of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony’s 2020-21 season has been reimagined because of the global pandemic.
 
The FMSO is abiding by all CDC and North Dakota Smart Restart guidelines to keep everyone as safe as possible. And, because Festival Concert Hall in the Reineke Fine Arts Center at NDSU is the FMSO’s home, we are abiding by NDSU policies, as well. This means two things: the concerts will be reimagined with chamber orchestra configurations of between 15 and no more than 35 musicians on stage, and there will be no live audience.
 
The program will be recorded, and season ticket holders will be given a private viewing of the streamed concert on Saturday evening, September 26. The public is invited to view the concert at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 27. Please note: there will be no live, in-person concerts at the normal Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon times.
 
Mahler’s symphonic music is known for its energy, vivid orchestration, and sometimes overwhelming sound, usually produced by large orchestras. Imagine, then, an arrangement of a Mahler symphony—for fifteen musicians! Klaus Simon has published arrangements of most of Mahler’s symphonies. His arrangement of Symphony No. 4 is scored for string quintet (two violins, viola, cello, and bass), plus one flute, clarinet, oboe, and bassoon, one French horn, one trumpet, percussion, timpani, and harmonium.

The concert features the return to Fargo of soprano Adrienne Danrich, who appeared in February 2019 in the cabaret-style program Love and Trouble at the Fargo Theatre. Ms. Danrich also sang the soprano part in an FMSO performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in April 2015. This time, Ms. Danrich will sing several songs that are particularly appropriate in these turbulent times of social unrest. Two songs will feature Music Director Christopher Zimmerman on the piano, and the final one will feature a small combo. In addition, of course, she will be the soprano soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.
